I agree that social division is still prevalent in our society. We are divided based on gender, sexual orientation, and race. In the book, societal divisions are largely racial but also economical. There is the obvious discrimination between different races as the townspeople make clear during the trial. However, Bob Ewell and his family are also divided from the rest of the community. Due to their lack of education and deplorable living conditions the rest of Maycomb generally does not associate with them.

Yes there are still social divisions in today's society however because of the work of people like Harper Lee more people are against racism and we fight for equal rights for all races instead of it being the other way around.

I'm not sure that I agree with saying that social divisions are different in today's society. Just because the barriers are painted a new color and renamed does not mean what it was originally is no longer there. Which is why I'm having some difficulty with some other people's responses that the divisions are completely different because racism, sexism, or discrimination in general isn't out in the open. Discrimination and barriers are getting better and we are working towards a a more tolerant society, but I think saying that the racism that exists in To Kill a Mockingbird is not longer in our modern lives is a an example of bias.

There will always be a social division of some kind because it is human nature to divide up into groups and those groups are going to have issues with each other.

I totally agree Grace. No matter how bad we want to try and make people see that we are not that different at all, everyone has outside influences that contribute to the way people look at others. Although it may be good at time, it all in all is unfair to those we shut out for physical appearance, gender, sexuality, and race. Its going to happen and people accept that but personally it is very upsetting and disappointing.

Social divisions, when compared between the book and today are not much different. While the book's divisions are far more serious, there are still social divisions today, and they are still going strong. A few notable examples are the racial division, the wealth division, and the education division.
I'm not saying it's any of us, but people still do not like others of different skin colors, there is a noticeable difference in wealth, with the rich living in more prominent areas, and the poor living in areas where conditions could be improved, and an equally shared dislike for the other between the two (Rich do not care for the poor, the poor do not like the rich). The same goes for the education division.
To reiterate, the books social divisions are more prominent and serious, while today's are still there but much less noticeable and most people keep to themselves about such things, unlike in the time period of the book.
