There are social divisions and social inequalities in today's society, and there will always be social inequality in any society. It is human nature to recognize ways that people are different from you, however that is not only negative. People usually take a pessimistic approach to noticing differences when they could be pointing out the ways that change is positive. In "Brave new World" by Aldous Huxley, we read about how genetic variation is something the world frowns upon. Obviously we do not want our society to turn out like the one portrayed in "Brave New World" so rather than negatively dividing humans up by race, religion, social class, hair color, etc. we could look at our differences as something posotive.

Today's social divide differs from Maycomb's. The divide in Macomb is based off of racial differences and social status. Today people of various races and statuses get along but things such as clothing, sexual orientation, and interests divide our community. The way people dress for some reason, is a factor in the division in today's society. If people aren't wearing the specific styles of clothing that are 'in' at that time, they are viewed differently. It often goes unnoticed but it still contributes to the social divide. Though our divisions are not exactly the same as in the story and the past, they still exist.

Although social divide today is not as drastic, racism is far from over. I predict that today's society will become more and more accepting, however. I do believe that it is human nature to have an "us" and "them" mentality, which usually takes the form of race, it does not have to be that way. Furthermore, I don't think things like clothing and interests divide people. Things such as race have given certain people inequality, injustice, and discrimination, but no one has ever been unequal because of the way they dress.

I definitely agree that the social divisions in today's society are different especially since there are no longer jim crow laws, but there is still the social division of the poor and the rich in our society.

Short and sweet post that does make sense. Yes social division is different these days because everything evolves eventually. But in this day in age we are trying to make things more equal. Like earlier you would walk away from a colored man but today we have figured out (finally) just because the skin is different doesn't mean the heart is different.

No matter what there will be social divisions. Although I do agree that it has been better with race but other things including, sexuality, religion, and social class have been divided in society.

In this book, social divisions were a widely talked about subject. I believe we still have social divisions in our world today. Sadly, most of what some people believe is based off of what they hear in our society. Because of that, we still have social divisions.

I completely agree social division is so present today. But it's not necessarily aunts not letting you talk to someone but more in schools, work environments, and even cities.

I agree with Noah. Today we may have certain social divisions, but the extent of which is not even close to that of in the 1930's in the South. There not only is there a large gap between the rich and the poor, but we have to take in to account also that during this time period blacks and whites were not even supposed to drink from the same water fountain, let alone be socially equal. Back then a colored man could be hung for even looking at a white woman, especially so in the south. So yes, we have minor social divisions today, but it is nothing compared to that in To Kill a Mockingbird.

When people were lynched it was quite common at this era, not so much today, since the whole laws that restrict murder it isn't so common.

In today's society, social division quite obviously still exists, however it is not the same as it was during the time that Lee wrote TKAM. Aspects of it today tend to include more topics along the lines of sexism and class separation, rather than the racism that took place during the time setting of Maycomb.

I also agree with Andrea social segregation is still prevalent because race, popularity, beliefs, religion, etc. And it always will stay this way unless world peace happens.

There are definitely still social divisions today. There are whole communities and countries that thrive off of being hateful and prejeduced against certain kinds of people.

I completely agree that there is still social division in today's society, but it is disguised differently and made to seem harmless. No matter how it's dressed up, social division still does damage to our society by separating people and creating harmful stereotypes that keep us from being able to see each other as equals.
