When I first heard the name of a book "To Kill a Mockingbird" I always thought that it was about Mockingbirds going extinct or something of that sort. But when I got to read and experience the book I realized that the name of the book basically spoiled the book based off of symbolism. What the book means by a mockingbird is innocence because all that they do is "sing" so to kill a Mocking bird would be to extinguish innocence. In "To Kill a Mockingbird" they are referring to other people as "mockingbirds". I absolutely love the way how Harper Lee refers to humans as animals because its not done so often and usually when someone is referred to as an animal of some sort they it is done negatively. So referring to someone like that is heart warming but, usually when they are referred to as a mocking bird it means something bad as already happened like when Tom Robinson was shot. Mr. Underwood compares his death to "the senseless slaughter of a songbird"(Lee 25) So basically the symbolism of the Mockingbird is just absolutely interesting and used wonderfully in this matter.

I agree, I think that the symbolism of the mockingbird and how it represents Tom Robinson is key to the story. The way that Lee's characters talk about Tom shapes the views of the reader toward him; had the characters not compared him to a songbird or painted him as innocent, then the reader may have thought that his conviction was justified. I know that personally, the way that people like Mr. Underwood talked about the trial helped me to understand fully what was happening duri9ng this part of the story.

I didn't really pick up on the meaning of the title until I was almost finished with the novel, but when I did I thought that Harper Lee used symbolism wonderfully. Mockingbirds don't harm anything, they're innocent animals, which is why it is a sin to kill them. Tom Robinson didn't hurt anyone, so therefore it can be inferred that it was a sin to declare him guilty. The verdict of Tom's trial was what caused his death, because if he had been declared innocent he would have never been imprisoned in the first place. The mockingbird is used as a symbol for Tom Robinson, hence the title To Kill A Mockingbird, because Tom Robinson was eventually killed despite his innocence.

I agree with you that the mocking bird was a symbol of innocents but was it just Tom Robinson's innocents or could it also be the kid's and possibly Boo's?

I would have to say that the Mockingbird is personified by a majority of the main protagonists throughout the book. Some of them are not killed in a literal sense, but some of them are deeply moved in a mental sense. Miss Maudie states in the book that "Mockingbird's don't do one thing but make music for us enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us.That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird."(p. 119) Music in this sense could be interpreted as good deeds, kind intentions, hard work, friendship, etc. Therefore, anyone of the protagonists could be considered a mockingbird as well, whether or not they are actually killed in the book. The best example of a mockingbird, I agree, would have to be Tom Robinson because of the sheer innocence of his situation. Atticus could also be considered a mockingbird because of his hard work and dedication to his job and especially to Tom Robinson's case.
However, the mockingbird could be interpreted differently. Instead of individual people being personified mockingbirds, you could stretch it farther to say the the mockingbird is a representation of compassion toward others, and can be killed by the selfish hearts and intentions of others. The mockingbird could also represent innocence in the sense that was originally noted in this thread. The bullets shot at the mockingbirds could represent the racist values of the people of Alabama and the South in general. Scout, Jem, and Atticus all withold the mockingbird within them. They have compassion and understanding of others, the mockingbird, but are shot at by the racist an derogatory opinions of others, the bullets.

I agree with you about the definition of a Mockingbird. Tom Robinson was innocent and the death of him should be considered a sin if related to a Mockingbird because in the book it states that its a sin to kill a Mockingbird. He was falsely accused and he was nothing but innocent.

I actually didn't think of this. I had a slight thought into it but never really made the connection between the title and why it was there. But knowing our teachers I needed to know this because it is going to defiantly be a question on the quiz "how is the mocking bird symbolized in the book?" You know it will be a needed thing. Thanks for expanding my knowledge of this novel

Birds are symbols of life and good passage into the afterlife in many religions, as well as representing innocence in the novel, the mockingbird symbolism definitely extends to Boo Radley, as well as Tom Robinson, even Scout's gradual loss of innocence throughout the book.

I agree Harper Lee used Tom Robinson and Boo Radley as symbolism in a fantastic and unique way. She also defines why it is a sin to kill a mocking bird throughout the book so the reader can see the symbolism more clearly. Lee said that they do nothing but sing for us as how Tom and Boo only helped others. Through this she showed how it was unjust to convict Tom, it was as if they had killed a mocking bird.
