Throughout the entirety of the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, I found that one of the most prevailing themes displayed was that of the inevitability and existence of social and political prejudice, especially due to inequality between groups of people. The town of Maycomb is a perfect example of this theme, as it consists largely of an arduous hierarchy of social status. The Finches dwell at the top of said hierarchy, the majority of citizens lay below them, and the Cunninghams, Ewells, and black citizens scale down the rest of the pyramid. This imbalance and racism in society perplexes the children in the book, and this perplexity is used by the author to critique classification and prejudice in society. However, this imbalance, being a main theme in the book, is the backbone for questioning and moral education. These social divisions are also explained to be destructive and irrational, leading to prejudice in human interaction. Is prejudice definite in society? Is it essential in order to keep the society alive?

There are a lot of themes in To Kill a Mockingbird, but I really like this one because it doesn't just apply to the book, but also to people's lives at the time the book was written and even today. The social hierarchy is key to the way that Maycomb functions, but I don't know that I would put the Finch family at the top of it, at least not during a good portion of the book when Atticus first takes on Tom Robinson's case. The other people in town don't really respect him or his family during that time, but by the end of the book I would agree that they are certainly close to the top, if not there. I think that the questions that you pose are very important ones, and to some extent prejudice in humans is not only to be expected, but important to each individual's understanding of other people. What is really key for people to keep in mind is that the prejudice needs to be balanced with acceptance and kindness, as Scout ultimately learns.

I would have to agree with Bekah, but I would also say that prejudice, as a foundation for social constructs, is not essential to keep a society alive. However, it does seem inevitable due to human nature. Humans naturally tend to compare themselves to others, already creating segregation among themselves regardless of skin color or ethnicity. So, while prejudice is not necessary, I would completely agree with Evan in saying that it is inevitable, especially in an extremely racist society like Maycomb county. Communities would be so much stronger if each individual member put down their differences and worked together as a team, instead of rivals.

In an ideal society, there would be no prejudice, as there would be no war or murder, but the fault in that utopia is its unattainability. The means to achieving that ideal would require draconian measures and coerced group logic. As Jenna previously noted, humans have a tendency to divide themselves among arbitrary social lines--regardless of race or ethnicity; it will always be a constant struggles for power. According to Atticus, "Don't fool yourselves--it's all adding up and one of these days we're going to pay the bill for it. I hope it's not in you children's time" (Chapter 23, pg. 296). Contempt towards their inferior social status is already manifesting in the black community (as evident by Lula at church). Every action has an equal but opposite reaction, and the same can be said throughout the course of humanity. However, is this perpetual struggle for power a necessity? No, but unfortunately I do believe it is a primary factor into any societal change.

Prejudice seems inescapable, and I agree that a utopia with no bias is unattainable. There will always be victims of prejudice, and I believe that it is necessary for a functional society. There will always be a social hierarchy that places minorities on both the bottom and top, with the majority in the middle. A perfectly equal society has been tried and failed, which can be seen in communist regimes. A functional society that has low cases of prejudice would be one that focuses heavily on eradicating ignorance and increasing education. Low education will perpetuate bias, which can ruin a society. Negative emotions towards other social classes will also perpetuate bias.

Social and political prejudice is definite not to keep order but because the is the potential for prejudice in everybody and Lee agrees because she wrote Miss Gates having duality in her views. This shows that nothing can destroy all prejudice because in is ingrained in the ideas of radicalism and the idea of gloating.
