In "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee Scout tells the story of how three children embark on a mission to draw out Boo Radley. This story takes place in the town of Maycomb, however, the author presents the town more as a character than simply the backdrop for a memory from Scout's childhood. The first time Maycomb is described, the author says, "Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired town when I first knew it." The way Harper Lee wrote about and referred to the town makes it appear as simply a character with the use of personification. Later the author goes on to say, "Maycomb County had been recently told it had nothing to fear but fear itself." Whenever Maycomb is mentioned it is mentioned in a way that gives it personality and a role in the story. The use if personification on the town creates an effect that makes the town not only a tow, but a character.

Throughout the story, the town of Maycomb is both a positive and negative entity. The town provides a relatively safe place for Scout and Jem to grow up in and explore. The town is also home to many good, kind people. However, the town turns against the Finch family during the trial of Tom Robinson, and the town also harbors many racist, cruel people. Harper Lee uses personification to describe the town based on the general population, such as when she refers to the town as "tired" (Lee 6). This description of the town is based off of the citizens, who "move slowly", but are "vaguely optimistic" (Lee 6). Lee personifies the town, but the town is not so much a character as it is a sum of all of its inhabitants.

I believe that Harper Lee describes Maycomb as a character because it is a town shaped by the characters that live there. Maycomb is both a positive and negative entity and seems to switch between the two with major events that happen in the town, such as Tom Robinson's case/trial. Like Mia said, Maycomb also harbors many racist and ultimately negative people which changes the feel of the town. Maycomb is shaped by its people and the events it sees.

The town of Maycomb is personified because of the people that grew up in it. The people in the town is what makes it the way it is. You can't go to a place and say it's the happiest place in the world when the residence there are all boring with no shred of light in them. When Lee is describing the town she is actually describing the residence of Maycomb.

I agree that the town is described as it's people are. They grew up in the town, and the people shape the town building it up, or slowly tearing it apart as their is fighting between the residents. When Lee is describing the town, it is slightly based off of some of the people there

I agree with the town being described as if its a person. It is a town that provided both positive and negative qualities but people make up a place and the towns description could also be a way of describing the people who live there.

I think the town switches back and forth being portrayed both good and bad because that's how Scout sees it. When bad things are happening and the Finch family aren't being treated right, the town isn't where Scout wants to be. But when good things are happening, it switches.
