I never quite realized the exact meaning behind the character names, and seeing them pointed out is very interesting. However, now I'd like to add the irony of Scout's nickname versus her given name; Jean Louise. Scout, like you noted, is a very hardy nickname, and fits her very well as she is a firey tomboy. Yet, her name is very dainty and feminine. It sounds like the name of the girl her aunt and a lot of other adults want her to be, a "ray of sunshine" in a dress. This might seem inconsequential but Harper Lee obviously spent a fair amount of time on these names evidently and I don't think she would have failed to see the irony.
