If we want to get technical and be accurate to both the time period and location, this would not have actually been considered murder. At the worst manslaughter in self defense, but considering the Ewells situation with money, they probably could not afford a trial anyhow. Not only this, but we also know that the jury is prejudiced, and seeing as the Ewells are very not liked, the trial would be in Boo's favor anyhow.

While what Atticus and the Sheriff did was illegal, I do not believe it was morally wrong. Being accused of murder could have ruined Jem's life all Atticus was doing was protecting the best interests of his son who only acted in self defense. Im addition, Jem's actions could very well have saed the life of his sister. Atticus did what any good father would have done.
