Maycomb had a very complicated social hierarchy. The Finches stand near the top of the social hierarchy, while the townspeople rest a little below them, or with them. The country folk, like the Cunningham's rest below the townspeople, but the Ewells rest below the country folk, and below them is the black community. When Aunt Alexandra tries to explain why Scout cannot invite Walter Cunningham over, it just continues to further confuse her and critique social interaction in the town, and ultimately in real life. Despite whether they might be good people or not, the hierarchy keeps people from fully interacting with each other. The children's confusion at the hierarchy shows how we interact with people mainly within our social class and avoid or only barely speak with people not in our class.

I agree with you. Jem's assessment of the social classes in Chapter 23 page 224, "There's four kinds of folks in the world. The ordinary kind like us and the neighbors... the Cunningams... the Ewells... and the Negroes." Even Raymond, a wealthy white man from a family who is okay with Negroes, said "They don't belong anywhere... they're just in-betweens." (Chapter 16, page 161) The social hierarchy in this book is very important because it has a role in shaping the characters, and it also had the theme of racism contributing to the way people were treated.

I agree with you, people not socializing with people that aren't in their social class is an issue that's been going on for a very long time now. I think the reason this happens is that as humans we naturally fear people that are different than us, and I think that's why people are racist, or sexist, or against a specific group of people. I think this was very common in TKAM because there wasn't any trust between any of the social classes. For example, if you were rich in that time period, would you invite somebody like Bob Ewell into your home? Probably not. This has been the way it is for hundreds of years and i think it will continue in the future.

In Maycomb, both money and race affected social class. If you were both rich and white, like the Finches, the you were in the highest class. If you weren't rich but you weren't poor, you would be in the "middle class" (as long as you were white, of course). The class below the middle class was made up of those who were poor and white. The class below them was made up of all of the African Americans. However, in my opinion the citizens of Maycomb viewed mixed race people as the lowest class. They were even below the African Americans and slaves, because they were outcasts who didn't belong in any of the above classes.

The social class itself is a concept made up by selfish adults putting themselves above another person or group of people. Yes, Maycomb has probably had these social classes for a long time but scout's confusion of why someone of a different class cant come over shows just how ridiculous it is. In the eyes of a young child not one man is better then the other. Though to an adult being seen with someone they put lower then them self is an outrage. As a man or woman matures they seem to learn hatred for any difference they have with another person most likely from an adult figure.
