I believe that Jeremy is confused by this phrase is because in the community he has grown up in tells him is it bad to befriend black people, but Atticus shows him that this isn't an insult because there is nothing wrong with being black peoples friend, and people who use that as an insult are ignorant to believe it is an insult.

I completely agree with your educated guesses of Atticus's personality. I also believe that in the novel, everyone was using the excuse that Tom Robinson was getting "special privileges" just because he was black. But, in reality, he was getting a fair chance with a lawyer and everything just like all the white individuals, except in his case it still wasn't fair. Just because of his color, his chances of winning the case were basically slim to none, with evidence or no evidence.

I agree with this statement completely. Atticus stood up for what he believed in even when people thought his opinion was wrong.
