I agree that Calpurnia had a big impact on their lives. But, if she were not a part of their lives', I don't think that they would racist or distrusting towards black people because Atticus is not like that. He still would have taught them everything that he did and passed on his values to them. Even if he hired a white cook/housekeeper, I think that she would not be racist or biased against black people because Atticus wouldn't hire someone like that; he would want the person who was to take care of his children to share most of the same values as him and not bring them up in a way that he did not think was right.

Even without Calpurnia's influence in their lives, I doubt Atticus ever would have raised children as biased and ignorant as most of the rest of Maycomb. However, Calpunia gave Jem and Scout an appreciation and understanding that the rest of Maycomb lacked. The chapter where Cal actually took the children to her church was a particularity eye opening experience. During the trial, they even sat with members of the church, signifying their support for Tom.

I think that without Calpurnia, they might have developed racist ideas by listening to the other kids at their school. But Atticus would have probably told them, how what they were saying was racist, and that they should not say that kind of stuff.

I think Scout and Jem wouldn't have had the same views on equality because they were raised by Atticus and Calpurnia to value every person and to treat them equally. And having Calpurnia as a mother figure helped them value others even more and see how African Americans weren't less or more than them.

I believe that Jem and Scout would have a bit more trouble understanding that people of color were then same as white people, but since they still had Atticus they would never become racist. Atticus would still teach them that you should teach everyone as equals no matter their skin color.

I think that Jem and Socut would have been racist if it hadn't been for Calpurnia's mother like presence and Atticus' open minded view on blacks.
