Based off of background knowledge i knew that this book was relatively serious, so when the book opened with Jem breaking his arm I was a little relieved. It was slightly comforting when Harper Lee used imagery and humorous details to make the book relatable where the kids were concerned. Then after the book had already reached the climax and got very tense, it was nice to have something less serious brought back in to relieve the reader.

At the beginning of the story the author explained that one of the characters broke his arm and it didn't really make sense to me. Then I see that the author wants us to understand the book and see the characters in it. The author was trying to make us understand that there is something between us and the characters in the book.

I believe Harper Lee begins the story with Jem breaking his arm to let readers know that the book is written from the future perspective rather than the present. In the beginning, is really doesn't make sense as to why that happened and why it even matters. Ultimately, it foreshadows the ending of the book. And it leaves all readers wondering how it all happens.

I believe the reason that Harper Lee included both of these events is to show that even in horrible times and events, normal summertime things can happen to anyone. Even though that someone attacking children caused this arm-breaking, like you said before, this is a relatable event in any child's life weather breaking an arm themselves or knowing someone that has. This event is used to make the whole story more relatable.

the book was set up like a "How I Met Your Mother" episode on steroids this is how all of this stuff led up to the event of jem breaking his arm, whether the events are or aren't important i tend to keep in mind they are narrated by the memories of a child (scout) which isn't uncommon for a child to go back way too far in history

I loved the way Lee started To Kill A Mockingbird. It seems so irrelevant. The speakers brother broke his arm, big deal, but it makes you wonder the relevance and hooks you to keep reading. I definitely forgot that this was even brought up at the beginning until I got to the end. Finally telling you what happened with Jem's arm at the end really brings everything together and Lee did a beautiful job with something so simple and seemingly irrelevant such as Jem breaking his arm.

I didn't realize this connection until you brought it up. I had completely forgotten that first sentence and did not think that it would be very important to the story; I just thought it was giving us background. But, in fact, it was foreshadowing to the end of the book. This is a very interesting way to write the story and I think it makes the book much more fun to read.

I don't know if I think it was Lee's intent to make a connection between Jem and the reader. It's important to remember the significance of Jem's arm being broken as it was the climax of the novel. I think it's more likely the purpose of the inclusion of Jem's arm was for foreshadowing.

Jem breaking his arm, and the fact that this is a coming of age story sparked another connection to a book and its movie.
Bear with me, but I can't help but make another connection to Harry Potter. Specifically, The Half Blood Prince.
There is a scene in the movie where Malfoy has been fixing the Vanishing Cabinet in the Room of Requirement and, sat in a cage is one white bird and one black bird. He takes the white bird and places it in the Cabinet. However, when the Cabinet returns the bird, the white creature is dead. Then later, he puts the black bird in and it comes back alive. I feel like that is when Malfoy's loss of innocence occurs. Because after that black bird returns, so does all the evil in the world.
The events leading up to Jem breaking his arm is the story of the loss of the children's innocence. And even afterward. Especially at Tom Robinson's trial. As children, they thought that everything was a wonderful Utopia, where people lived in harmony. However, when things suddenly started to head south, their innocence began to deteriorate. And by the end of one summer, their innocence was gone.
I understand that this connection is a bit obscure and a bit strange, but this is something I noticed.

I find that the casual mention of Jem breaking his arm at the start of the novel fits in very well because the who'll point of the book is to challenge what you think and to look beyond comfortable explanations and ways of thinking. And starting the book off by saying Jem broke his arm and not giving you the slightest hint of the insane story behind it parallels with how Harper Lee wants you to second guess and look beyond the ordinary.

I think that in some ways Jem breaking his arm probably helped him mature more after the end of the book.

When Jem breaks his arm at the beginning of the book it is something relatable to hook you for the beginning of the rest of the book. I also agree with Ivy on all her points because they are spot on.
